How to make bara brith

What is bara brith?
Bara brith is a delicious, nutritious traditional tea bread enjoyed throughout Wales. This traditional bread is flavoured with tea, dried fruits and spices.

Once you've baked your bara brith bread, this will keep for around 5-6 days.
What does bara brith mean in English?
In English, bara brith translates to 'speckled bread'.
What's the difference between bara brith and fruit cake?
Bara brith and fruit cake are similar, however, bara brith is a bread and not a cake. It is often confused as being a cake, although it is a traditional bread with added sweetness from currants, spices and tea.
Method
Step 1:
Soak the fruit and sugar in tea and leave overnight.
Step 2:
The next day, preheat the oven to 170°C (fan 150°C, gas mark 3). Grease and line a 900g/2lb loaf tin.
Step 3:
Mix the remainder of the ingredients into the fruit, sugar and tea mixture. Beat well.
Step 4:
Spoon the mixture into the tin and bake for 90 minutes, or until an inserted skewer comes out clean. Serve cold or warm with butter.
