This recipe is as close as we can get to our favourite Millie's cookies. For the perfect soft, chewy texture, bake them for no more than 7 minutes. Take them out and let them set as they harden up a bit more. If you prefer them a little harder, just leave them in the oven for a couple more minutes. 

The flavour combinations are endless; Caramac, Chocolate Orange, Kinder, Smarties, M&Ms... just follow the same recipe and swap out the chocolate chips for your favourite sweeties and voila, you can tailor cookie flavours for your family and friends so that everyone is happy.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C, (fan 180°C, gas mark 4) and line 2 baking trays with baking parchment.

  2. In a large bowl cream together the butter and sugars until pale and fluffy then add the egg and vanilla extract and mix together well.

  3. Sift the flour and salt and then add to the egg mixture. Mixing thoroughly until a soft dough forms. Finally stir in the chocolate chips.

  4. Break off walnut sized pieces of the dough, and roll into balls. Place these on the baking sheets leaving space between them as they will spread out during baking.

  5. Place in the oven and bake for 7 minutes for the ultimate Millie's experience, or 10 minutes if you prefer a crunch. Leave to cool on the trays for about 10 minutes then transfer onto a cooling wire to cool completely.

     

    These store for about 4 days in an airtight container.

    Every time i make these cookies they always taste spectacular. Two things though, they are quite greasy and you don't really need the vanilla extract ,although they taste better with it. Overall i would give them 5 stars. I have one word to describe these AMAZING!

    Made several times for friends and family, most say best cookies they’ve ever had! Very similar to M&S cookies if you make them large. Swapping some cocoa powder in place of the flour makes double choc, also very tasty.

    This is the best cookie recipe ever. I make them vegan by using egg replacer as instructed on its packet and vegan butter and chocolate. They taste amazing and there is no way you could tell they are vegan. They're gooey and soft but hold their shape. Used a combination of dark brown and light brown sugar which makes them even more caramely. Definitely bake these!

    AMAZING recipe! Have used this recipe a few times now, but never follow it completely, as I use what I have got in terms of sugar, butter and chocolate, have also replaced the chocolate with honeycomb, but use less of these - about 100g. Today's batch - white chocolate and cranberry with a bit of cinnamon - turned out just as yummy as the rest and will be gone in a flash.

    Take a little longer to cook but good texture. Just too sweet, toothachingly sugary. Would recommend leaving out the caster sugar or at least halving it!

    I have been making choc chip cookies for 50 years my mother-in-law was American & their is no way that she would use self raising flour in cookies S.R. flour is for cakes, also not caster sugar, alot of people saying too sweet that is the reason why, I think I will make them just to see the difference in mine & these.

    Easily the best cookie recipe I've ever tried! They look undercooked at 7 or 8 minutes but pull them out and let rest on the tray for 10 mins before transferring to cooling rack. I use a silicone sheet so they don't stick. Each ball should be 32 or 33g each if you want them all the same size.

    Really good recipe, amazing cookies - did not last long!! Note - gas mark 4 doesn't seem right - I need my oven on gas mark 6 to get to 200 degrees... You're best off double checking the actual temp with an oven thermometer if using gas

    Absolutely delicious! I have never been into baking as everything I have tried to make in the past was just a flop and it put me off trying out more recipes. This recipe was forwarded on to me by a friend after trying the cookies at her house. I've been making them ever since! Really quick and really easy and very tasty

    I make it with just brown sugar and minus the castar sugar as I like to add more chocolate to the mixture instead. YUMMY!

    self raising flour is an odd choice I admit but I made this with some matcha mixed in and it's good stuff. Starts off cakey when you initially take it out - as all cookies kinda do - you just gotta let it cool and sit for a bit. All good fam.

    Lovely, i make them fairly regularly, my parents, sister and grandparents love them, only thing I’d say to do differently is if you cook it for 7 mins it burns ever so slightly so i recommend cooking for 6 mins instead.

    Easy to make, even when the battery has run out on the scales and you have to resort to cups!! Or you don’t have any brown sugar left and have to use all white!! Always amazed that any of the cookie dough ends up in the oven at all, the kids love it. Makes loads too, even with generous dollops in each ball.

    This is a very good recipe. I accidentally used plain flour instead of self-raising flour, and they still turned out really nice. I would say to some people for whom the recipe hasn’t worked, perhaps try making all the walnut-sized dough balls the exact correct weight, then the timing works out well, and also you don’t get variation in sizes. To do this is, make a note of the weight of your mixing bowl when it is empty, then weigh it again when the finished dough mixture is in it. Subtract the weight of the empty bowl from the weight of the bowl with dough, to get the weight of the dough. Then divide by 24 to get the weight of each dough ball. Put some non-stick baking paper on your scales and weigh each balls, then adjust the size of the ball until it’s the correct weight. This sounds very time-consuming, but I find it is quite quick and results in equal cookies which then you can time to perfection.
    One cookie dough ball = [weight of full bowl - weight of empty bowl] divided by 24

    Came out great! Instead of using choc chips I chopped up chocolate from bars and I halfed & halfed it - half milk choc and half cherry flavoured dark choc - tasted great! My oven is also a bit dodgy so I did them in 6 cookie batches, the first ones didn't come out great - they are so soft they are falling apart, (but great with some ice cream), I adjusted for the rest 9 mins on a higher gas mark and they came out perfect!

    Amazing recipe! The cookies came out perfectly chewy and delicious (I cooked them for 8mins). I doubled the main ingredients and then split it to make one choc chip as the recipe calls for, and another peanut butter by adding 2tbsp PB and 100g chopped roasted peanuts.     I’ve made these wonderful cookies a handful of times now! This recipe never disappoints! I prefer 7 minutes in the oven and let cool for 10. I have experimented with either choc chip cookies, Nutella filled cookies, crushed up chocolate mini eggs and more ! It’s such a simple recipe you can change and experiment with ease!

    I've just made this. Unbelievably delicious! Didn't add any salt as I used salted butter. As well as the vanilla, I added a tsp of orange extract. I had no chocolate chips so used smashed up Daim bars. Baked for 10 mins - best cookies I've ever made. Thanks for sharing!

    The first time I made these cookies I felt that they didn't look cooked so left them in for a couple of minutes more, resulting in cookies that were more crispy rather than chewy. However, I trusted the recipe with the next batch and they were perfect. They do look like they are not cooked but once you have left them on the tray to cool for 10 minutes they are perfectly crinkled on top and chewy in the middle.
    This is my go-to Cookie recipe and I love making different flavours and variations on this recipe. So easy to make and taste great too!

    Love this recipe! First batch I made came out perfectly, left for 8-9 mins in oven, second batch done for about 10-11 mins and it was too long, they were still delicious but not quite as good at first batch, a bit more crunchy. I was gutted with the third batch as they came out a bit cakey and stodgey. I knew something was up before cooking as the mix went all crumbly when i added the flour and mixed so i think i overworked it. Completely my mistake though as the recipe is perfect!

    Fabulous cookies. I only use 160g of brown & caster sugar mixed as don't like things too sweet. Depending on your oven the cooks varies between 7 & 10 minutes for them to not look anemic!

    It’s my 2nd attempt at baking cookies ( I am a novice baker) and wanted to bake a cookie that tasted as close as possible to the ‘Millie’s cookies’ - as my daughter LOVES them and it’s her birthday next week, so thought a test run was needed first! This is an excellent recipe - so simple to do and they tasted great! Nice and gooey! I would suggest though to bake for a minute longer.. this was purely for the cookie to look a bit browner. I thought at 7mins, the colouring was too pale. I only used half of the cookie dough today and put the rest in the fridge for another bake run tomorrow. I think this will become a firm family favourite! 😋x

    I halved the amount of each ingredient as I thought 24 cookies was a bit excessive for 2 people... After trying one I instantly regretted not doubling the recipe! So tasty! Mine didn't spread out and stayed ball shaped but as soon as they came out the oven I gave them a tiny press down with a potato masher and they were perfect the size of Maryland cookies but tasting just like millies

    Taste amazing, i made mine vegan by just using vegan butter, bourneville Chocolate (150g bar crushed up) and flax egg. Mine made 21 and took 8 minutes (180 fan). They were lovely and soft even when cold but not under cooked!

    Absolutely amazing!!! Other times I've made cookies they haven't had that nice sink in the middle or any cracks but these do and taste like heaven! I've done these multiple times and they taste divine with dairy milk or galaxy chocolate ( sorry if your American can't get this wonderful chocolate) and I also leave them in batches in the fridge then take them out in the morning and get them to room temp and bake them so they stay fresh.

    This recipe is AMAZING! After trying the cookies and realising how good they were, we decided we would try and make baked, deep dish cookie with the dough. We made the dough as usual, and for 1 serving we used the same amount that you would need for 4 cookies (a very big treat!) , and after putting it in a tin and cooking it for 8 minutes (until golden) it came out as the best gooey cookie dough thing that I have EVER TRIED.     I didn't have chocolate chips so took the long route! Heated up a tin of condensed milk and stirred 5 ish tablespoons of cocoa powder in. Left to chill overnight.. then use this as chocolate. Push a little into each ball of dough. Winner!

    Honestly the nicest cookies I’ve ever eaten. My blobs were slightly larger than walnut sized so I put them in for 9 minutes which is perfect. Slightly crunchy on the edges and soft in the centre.

    I have used this simple recipe many times to bake the most delicious soft cookies that are always a hit with family and friends. They re very much like Millie Cookies. I do however adjust the sugar amount and only add half the amount of both sugars listed in the recipe otherwise the cookies are far too sweet-by halving the sugar amounts the cookies come our very well as the choc chips are also sweet. I like to add a tablespoon of vanilla essence ( i use the non alcoholic type) as the smell and taste is amazing. I cover the dough in the fridge for an hour so the flavours all settle and then shape and bake but this is optional as its not necessary, It's a very quick and easy recipe so kids can get involved in making these professional tasting cookies.

    Just made these with the kids and they turned out amazing! I needed an easy recipe and was running low on store cupboard ingredients..no self-raising flour & no baking powder, but used plain flour & bicarbonate of soda + lemon juice. 10 min bake at gas mark 4 left them soft in middle and crispy round the edges! Delicious!

    These were very easy and quick to make. My whole family loved them so much that they were finished the same day! Only thing I would say is that it is a bit too sweet, so I will try it again with less sugar. But for an indulgent snack, this is perfect.     Made these cookies today! They're perfect! We used chocolate chunks instead of schips and saved some to put ontop of the cookie balls before you cook them! It leaves them at the top all melted like little chocolate puddles! I'd recommend fully pre heating the oven (Thats probably the issue with the 1-2 star comments) because I only baked mine for 6 and a half minutes and they're perfection!

    These were delicious! I found that with the flour it’s easier to add the 220g, fold it into the egg mix and then add slowly add more flour until it turns into a dough. Also, everything should be mixed with a spoon and not an electric whisk.

    Yes these could be baked straight from frozen, just adjust your baking time by a few extra minutes to take into account that they are baked from frozen.
    Alternatively thoroughly defrost before baking and bake as usual.

    First time baking these, and I’ll always come back to this recipe! I checked them after 7 mins and decided they needed longer. They were in for about 11 minutes (thinking about it they were larger than walnut size so makes sense the extra time) and they were lovely and chewy in the middle with a crisp edge. Perfect!

    Best cookie recipe and so easy! I used chopped hazelnuts and dark choc chips. The cook time depends on your idea of what ‘walnutsize’ means and your oven. If you’re fussy about cookie texture, I recommend putting only a couple in first and cook for 7 mins to see if you like texture, then bake larger batch with your time adjustment. I baked for 10 mins after my first couple were too soft at 7 mins. Amazing recipe, will use as a base for lots of flavours - thank you!

    I’m genuinely shocked at how good these turned out!!     Absolutely delicious. Baked for 7 mins tasted lovely, but a bit too soft. Baked another batch, this time for 10 mins. Perfect!
    Wife was initially surprised that I was using self raising and not plain flour. For anyone who is still deciding what recipe to follow when baking chic chip cookies, this is the one for you. you won’t go far wrong. I reduced the amount of sugar to 90g each, family thought it was a bit too sweet, further reduced to 80g each Perfect. Also I had set my Fan oven to 150c. Hope it helps.

    I cannot stress enough my lack of baking experience, and the absolute perfection generated by this recipe. I've never make cookies before, and probably baked one or two cakes.

    If you follow the recipe precisely, you will end up with commercial quality cookies. I baked mine for an extra minute, and found that they improved day by day. On the day, quite gooey and rich, the second day, probably more Subway-esque, third day, absolute cookie utopia.

    Tried making these. After reading other reviews I put slightly less sugar in (100g light brown and 90g caster), the rest I followed the recipe.

    The first tray I made them slightly too big so they took longer to cook. I also left them in too long. I found that you need to take them out before they look cooked, because they continue to brown after? I made smaller ones for the other trays but it was still hard to time it right. You definitely need to take them out before you think you do.

    However, they taste amazing! I'd definitely make them again! No problems with dough constantly as other people have suggested. And I'm not an experienced Baker. Can't stop eating them.

    I don’t get any of the bad reviews! Cookies have to be my most favourite treat ever and I’ve always loved Millie’s cookies so was eager to try this recipe. This is honestly the best recipe for cookies that I’ve found. Chewy with a slight crunch to the outside. I’ve left them in the oven for 7 and 8 minutes and prefer them when they’ve been in for 8. Have made exactly the numbers stated in the recipe. During lockdown we’ve Tried lots of different variations - white, milk, dark chocolate, smarties, mint chocolate, orange chocolate. All delicious! You literally substitute with anything you like! One of my favourites is to add 2 tsp of almond extract and halved glacé cherries to get a Bakewell version. Delicious!! Would recommend this recipe for the perfect cookie a million times over!!

    These are absolutely fantastic.

    What we did was split the dough in half and put 100g of choc chip into one half of the dough and 100g of mixed fruit into the other half. We can't decide which we like more they are both delicious.

    Honestly can say these came out better than a millies cookie the last batch I made and they last longer!

    Have made these a few times now - great recipe! I’ve changed it a couple of times - swapped the choc chips for sultanas or cherries and the vanilla for cinnamon or almond. The sultana and cinnamon have ended up being the favourite here, but only when there are no children around - their favourite is obvs the choc chip!

    First time making these are they are SO good. Followed the recipe and added in a mixture of chocolate chunks as that’s all we had available. Definitely taste like a Millie’s cookie 🍪.
    100% recommend this recipe. Easy to follow, quick and simple to make too. We weighed our mixture out into 50g dough balls and managed to make 13 cookies. We can’t wait to make these again next weekend. Trust me they don’t last long once you’ve baked them because they are just too delicious 😋

    I was sceptical at 1st because the dough was really loose, but I had loads of random easter chocolate left over. I bashed it all in the dough, mixed it all up and chucked them in the oven. man they taste good.

    Thanks for this! Used flax as egg replacer and weren't sure if it would work but turned out great! My only error was made them a bit too big and so a little squashed as they started spreading. Know for next time to make a little smaller as will defo be making them again 👍🏼

    Honestly awful, why would you use self raising flour in a cookie?!!
    Followed the recipe and they’re more like cakes and nothing like a cookie, expanded ridiculous amounts and took ages to cook!

    I made these yesterday and unfortunately they were very, very greasy. They were leaving grease stains on fabrics and when chewing my mouth would fill up with oil. Followed the recipe so not sure what went wrong !

    They’re really good! I baked them for around 15 minutes as they were bigger than recommended and they’re lovely and crispy on the outside while chewy on the inside. I will use this recipe many times in the future!

    Excellent cookies!! Best recipe and so simple. First time worked perfectly. We’re in lockdown, didn’t have any chocolate chips, so used a mixture of all different types of chocolate (dairymilk, rolo, toffee crisp, quality street, crunchie, mini eggs...) worked great!

    Amazing - just amazing! Beautifully crunchy on the outside but soft in the middle, just what I look for in a cookie. I baked them myself and let’s just say I am not exactly a Michelin-star chef but my family loved them and it is now their favourite desert. Sometimes I make the batch but don’t bake it but put it in the freezer and take it out a day later,put it in the oven for a while-IT MAKES A GREAT COOKIE DOUGH!!!

    We’ve made these cookies 🍪 so many times now and each time we’ve made they’ve been spot on. Chewy in the middle and crunch on the outside. We reduce the sugar slightly as are very sweet. 💯% 👌🏻

    Amazing recipe!! Within the day they had gone, Kids and grown ups loved them. I added some white chocolate chucks into my mix as well as the milk. I served them warm with ice cream perfect will be making them again.

    Been struggling to find the perfect cookie recipe for as long as I can remember. First time baking them and they came out super! I chopped some dairy milk chocolate and added that instead of ordinary chocolate chips and that tastes amazing! Highly recommend.

    These are absolutely amazing. I havent had a good experience making cookies in the past but i think these were perfect if I do say so myself. I got 21 good sized cookies (with smarties in) out of this and my dough was quite sticky, but it turned out fine.

    I've made these lots of time now, I also only use 100grams of chocolate chips and 100grams of mini smarties, and for my triple chocolate ones I use 10 grams less flour and add 10 grams of coco powder 100 grams of chocolate chips and then chop in half 100 grams of mini rolo's.

    The first time I made these cookies they were amazing! Which is why i'm. really confused on where I've gone wrong the second time round, the dough is to sticky to roll dough balls, I added more flour bt still a problem. I've made a second batch of dough n again it's to sticky so I've put it in the fridge to see if that helps.

    Tasted good, but anyone know why my cookies didn't flatten in the oven. They were in walnut sized dough balls but didn't really spread to look like the Millie style cookie.

    Hi,

    Did you chill your cookies before baking? Chilled dough would hold their shape rather than spread out like you were hoping. Perhaps next time use the palm of your hand to gently press down on your cookies before baking to improve the shape.

    I made these following the ingredients as shown and found them well too sweet. I strayed away from the recipe shown and used 115g butter and 100g of each sugar 190g of self raising flour and 30g corn flour. After doing this the cookies where delicious
