How to make soda bread

This soda bread recipe is really quick and easy to make. There's no kneading or proving required, and our recipe makes one delicious soda bread loaf.

What is soda bread?

Soda bread is simply an easy-to-make bread which doesn't contain any yeast. The unique texture of soda bread is a result of the reaction between the buttermilk and baking soda, which forms small bubbles of carbon dioxide in the dough.

Method

  1. Step 1:

Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan, gas mark 6). Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartar into a large bowl, then stir in the salt.

  2. Step 2:

Lightly rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

  3. Step 3:

Make a well in the centre and gradually add the buttermilk and enough of the water to form a soft dough

  4. Step 4:

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly, then shape into a 20cm round. Place on a baking sheet and, using a sharp knife, mark a deep cross on the top.

  5. Step 5:

Bake the loaf for 30 minutes or until risen and golden brown. Cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or cold.
